Nintendo Loses Patent Infringement Case in U.K.

posted on by Andrew Osmond
U.K. ruling that Nintendo infringes Philips Electronic over motion and gesture tracking systems used by Wii.

Reuters quotes a spokesman for Philips Electronics NV saying that the company had won a patent infringement case against Nintendo in the United Kingdom. According to the spokesman, the patent related to motion and gesture tracking systems used in the Wii game console.

The spokesman added, 'It's about a patent for motion, gesture and pointing control that we make available to manufacturers of set-top boxes and games consoles through a licensing program... We've requested fair compensation for the use of our patents."

Bloomberg specifies that Nintendo infringed two Philips patents, but did not violate a third. In his High Court ruling, the judge wrote that, 'The common general knowledge did not include a device combining a physical motion sensor with a camera and the reasons advanced by Nintendo for putting those two sensors together in one unit are unconvincing.'

Bloomberg adds that, 'Nintendo said it believes the two patents are invalid and it will seek to appeal the decision.'
