Kiminori Wakasugi's Kappei Manga to End in 3 Chapters

posted on by Karen Ressler
Story follows isolated martial artist's attempt to rejoin modern society

Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine will announce on Friday that Kiminori Wakasugi (Detroit Metal City) will end his Kappei comedy manga in the next three chapters.

Wakasugi began the series in Young Animal's May 2011 issue after Detroit Metal City ended its run in the same magazine. Kappei's fifth compiled volume shipped in Japan on June 27.

The plot summary is as follows:

Kappei is a martial artist living in a secluded and isolated small island, among many young men training vigorously with their Master to survive the July 1999 apocalypse predicted by Nostradamus — which never came. The Master finally gave up in 2011, disbanded the martial art camp, and sent members back to modern-day Japan. With no knowledge of the modern world, Kappei arrives in Tokyo and starts a new life: as a hero without antagonists.

Wakatsugi's Detroit Metal City inspired an original video anime and live-action film. Sentai Filmworks released the OVA series and Viz Media released the live-action film on home video.
