The new film in the Girls und Panzer franchise with an all-original story was announced last year, and TV anime series Tsutomu Mizushima was confirmed to be directing the film as well.

The anime franchise began with a television series that premiered in 2012. The story centers around high school girls who drive tanks that exist in real life, as they compete in teams. Crunchyroll and Anime Network both streamed the anime outside Japan. An all-new original video anime (OVA) titled "Kore ga Hontō no Anzio-sen Desu!" (This is the Real Anzio Battle!) premiered in Japanese theaters earlier this month, and the anime shipped on DVD and Blu-ray on Friday.
