New, larger models include new shoulder buttons, mirco-SD slot, NFC technology

Nintendo announced on Friday during its Nintendo Direct video presentation that new Nintendo 3DS models will be available in Japan on October 11. The new 3DS will retail for 16,000 yen (about US$154) and the new 3DS XL will go for 18,800 yen (about US$180). A Western release date was not announced.

The new 3DS systems will include a new analog c-stick near the A, B, X and Y buttons, which works similarly to the old yellow C-stick for the Nintendo Gamecube controllers, as well as new "ZL" and "ZR" shoulder buttons, positioned next to the existing L and R buttons. The new 3DS will also be equipped with a micro-SD slot near the back of the system.

The new 3DS systems will also have near-field communication (NFC) technology, which allows the 3DS system to work with the upcoming Amiibo figures.

Nintendo will also be releasing a new Monster Hunter 4G Nintendo 3DS system, which will come with a copy of Monster Hunter 4G, for 25,600 yen (about US$245) on October 11. A special edition Super Smash Brothers 3DS will ship in November. The limited edition Super Smash Brothers 3DS was previously announced to ship in Europe on October 3 for for £209.99 (about US$350.00).
