Attack on Titan Released Monday (Updated 2)

posted on by Andrew Osmond
First volume of series released as Blu-ray Collector's Edition and DVD; conclusion to From the New World (DVD) and live-action HK/Hentai Kamen also released.

On Monday September 15, Manga Entertainment will release the first volume of the action/monster series Attack on Titan, as a DVD, a Blu-ray and a Blu-ray Collector's Edition (pictured). All editions include two commentary tracks by the dub crew. The Collector's Edition Blu-ray contains a bonus DVD disc with a 'Making of Attack on Titan' film, a booklet, plus 13 episodes of the spoof series 'Chibi Theatre: Fly, Cadets, Fly!'

The series is based on Hajime Isayama's original manga, which depicts the battles between humans and the giants who rule the world outside humans' walled enclaves. Isayama launched the series in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine in 2009. The manga has become a sleeper hit, and Kodansha USA is publishing it in North America.

Attack on Titan stars Yuuki Kaji as Eren Yeager, Yui Ishikawa as Mikasa Ackerman, and Marina Inoue as Armin Arlert. Additional cast members include Kishô Taniyama as Jean Kirstein, Yu Shimamura as Annie Leonhart, Yu Kobayashi as Sasha Blouse, Shiori Mikami as Christa Lenz, Hiro Shimono as Connie Springer, Ryota Ohsaka as Marco Bott, Yoshimasa Hosoya as Reiner Braun, Tomohisa Hashizume as Bertolt Hoover, Saki Fujita as Ymir, Keiji Fujiwara as Hannes, Hiroshi Kamiya as Levi, Daisuke Ono as Erwin, and Romi Park as Hanji.

Other credits include director Tetsuro Araki (Death Note, Highschool of the Dead, Guilty Crown), head writer Yasuko Kobayashi (Shakugan no Shana, Claymore, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure), character designer Kyoji Asano (Psycho-Pass, Tokyo Marble Chocolate), and Wit Studio (in cooperation with Production I.G).

MVM will release the concluding half of the series From the New World (right) on DVD. (The Blu-ray edition has been shifted back to October 6.) A-1 Pictures adapted Yūsuke Kishi's award-winning 2008 speculative-fiction novel. The series was directed by Masashi Ishihama, the character designer and animation director of the Read or Die franchise and Welcome to the Space Show. The story is set in Japan a millennium from now. Five children — Saki, Satoru, Maria, Mamoru, and Shun — have been born and raised in a tranquil town. The children come to realize the true nature of their world, including the bloody history that brought humanity to this state.

The original novel shared The Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of Japan's 29th Nihon SF Taishō Award with Mitsuo Iso's Dennō Coil anime series in 2008.

Also on September 15, Manga will release the live-action HK/Hentai Kamen film adaptation of Keishuu Andou's Ultimate!! Hentai Kamen manga. Ryōhei Suzuki (live-action Gatchaman, Mei-chan no Shitsuji, Hana-Kimi, Yankee-kun to Megane-chan) stars as Kyōsuke Shikijō, a high school boy who transforms into a hero by wearing a panties mask — and little else.

Update - Attack on Titan release details amended.

Update 2 - From the New World volume 2 added; apologies for the oversight which led to this release being left off the original story.
