A Silent Voice Author Ōima Wants to Draw Sci-Fi, Fantasy

Artist's next series teased with rough sketches, interview

This year's 51st issue of Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine unveiled rough drafts of character designs for A Silent Voice - Koe no Katachi author Yoshitoki Ōima's next series on Wednesday. The designs and story are not yet final, but Ōima told the magazine that she would like to draw something different from her past work. "Next, I want to draw science fiction and fantasy," Ōima said.

When asked if she had a plan for her new work yet, she said she only has a rough image. She said she isn't at the stage yet where she can give a simple explanation, but she said it's probably becoming a story around the phrase "How do you face something you created yourself?"

When asked when her new serialization would start, she said she's been enduring a lot for quite a while now, so for a little bit she wants to play Tokimeki Memorial 2. Oima then immediately said "No, I'm lying. I will try my best (laugh)."

A Silent Voice - Koe no Katachi ended in the same issue along with the announcement that an anime is in the works. Ōima began the manga as a one-shot in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in 2011, and then turned the story into a full series in the main Shonen Magazine last August. Crunchyroll has been releasing the series in English online as Kodansha publishes the manga in Japan, and Kodansha USA will publish the series in print in North America.
