Nintendo, Philips End Motion-Sensing Patent Dispute
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
Philips resolved its patent litigation against Nintendo after reaching an agreement on Tuesday. The Dutch technology company was proceeding with patent infringement cases against the Japanese gaming company in Germany, Great Britain, France, and the United States over Nintendo consoles' gesture-tracking and motion systems.
Both companies decided to cross-license portions of their respective patent portfolios. Philips had already won an infringement case against Nintendo in Great Britain in June and had planned to continue proceedings in the three other jurisdictions. The company did not reveal any financial details regarding the settlement with Nintendo.
Nintendo previously won a patent lawsuit filed by IA Labs and later obtained the company's patent portfolio. It also won an appeal in the lawsuit filed by Ohio-based company Motiva over claims that the Wiimote infringed on the company's patent last year. Nintendo lost a separate patent lawsuit in March 2013, where U.S. Federal Court found in favor of former Sony Corporation employee and inventor Seijiro Tomita on his patent for 3D technology.
