Oricon's Annual Video Release Market Report, which surveys the Japanese home video market for the past year (from December 30, 2013 to December 28, 2014), reported that the Blu-ray market was in its fifth consecutive year of growth. The Blu-ray market was worth a total of 123.67 billion yen (around $1.04 billion, 13.6% increase from last year), with 17.068 million units sold (17.3% increase).

The DVD market was worth 128 billion yen (around $1.08 billion, 12.1% decrease), and sold 26.432 million units (15% decrease). The higher per-unit cost of Blu-rays account for the almost equal worth between the Blu-ray and DVD markets. The entire home video disc market combined was worth 251.67 billion yen (around $2.13 billion, 1.1% decrease), with 43.5 million units sold (4.7% decrease).

By segment, animation DVDs and Blu-rays sold the most, and the market was worth 87.63 billion yen (around $742 million, 3.9% increase). Its total share in the overall disc market was 34.8% (up from 33.1% last year), and sold a total of 12.658 million units (5.8% increase). The report notes that Walt Disney Animation Studios' movie Frozen alone sold 2.269 million units, and was the highest seller of the year in the animation segment. Music Blu-ray and DVD sales were worth a total 71.5 billion yen (around $606 million, 0.1% increase).

Sony Music Entertainment was ranked first in the report's chart for top-selling companies, its seventh consecutive year doing so. Over the past year, it grossed 24.51 billion yen (around $207 million, 8.2% increase). The report notes that home video sales of Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie Part 3: Rebellion, Kara no Kyoukai: Mirai Fukuin, the Monogatari series were among the company's top sellers.

Walt Disney Studio Japan ranked second in the same chart (ranked eighth last year) with 19.66 billion yen (around $166 million) in sales. Their sales increased 219.3% from last year. The report notes that Frozen, The Wind Rises, and Miyazaki Hayao Kantoku Sakuhin-shuu (The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki) were among its top sellers.
