IC Carddass Dragon Ball Game Is First With NFC Chip in Every Card

NFC chips allow players to play digitally online after September 19 launch

Bandai announced last Thursday that it will release a new Dragon Ball trading card game titled IC Carddass Dragon Ball on September 19. The company says that the game is the world's first to feature a near field communication (NFC) chip embedded in every card.

Bandai also launched a website for the game, which began streaming a promotional video last Saturday. The video features the opening theme of the Dragon Ball Super TV anime series ""Chōzetsu Dynamic!" by Kazuya Yoshii, and is narrated by Masako Nozawa.

The video explains the game's mechanics. Each deck will contain a single leader card, and 40 battle cards that comprise a player's deck. Players use battle cards to attack and call allied characters, dealing damage to his opponent's leader card. As a player's leader card takes damage, it will eventually be flipped into an "Awakened" mode, strengthening the card.

The game's cards will contain NFC chips that will allow NFC-compatible smartphones or a special USB card reader (for Windows PCs) to scan the cards and include them in a player's digital card database. This will allow players to fight with their cards online through a smartphone, tablet, or Windows PC app.

The game will include characters from Dragon Ball Super, including Super Saiyan God Goku and Beerus, as well as classic characters such as Gohan, Vegeta, and Piccolo. A starter set of 41 cards which includes a USB card reader will cost 3,240 yen (about US$26), and will also come in a package without the USB card reader for 1,620 yen (US$13). Booster packs will cost 216 yen (US$1.70), while booster packs bought from a vending machine will cost 200 yen (US$1.60). Normal booster packs and those bought from vending machines will contain different cards.
