Japanese Home Video Game Market Dips

Overseas market grows while domestic market continues downward trend

The Computer Entertainment Society (CESA) published the results of its annual survey on home video games, "2015 CESA Games White Paper," on Monday, reporting a dip in the Japanese home video game market.

The market scale of home video game hardware and package software in 2015 was valued at 373.4 billion yen (US$3.03 billion), down more than 30 billion yen from the same company's 2014 result of 409.5 billion yen (US$3.32 billion).

This this continues a downward trend: CESA previously reported that the market scale was 485.7 billion yen (US$3.94 billion) in 2013 and 501.9 billion yen (US$4.07 billion) in 2012.

However, the overseas market scale has increased from 2.822 trillion yen (US$22.9 billion) to 3.532 trillion yen (US$28.7 billion) between 2014 and 2015.

In addition, the number of titles that have sold more than a million copies has increased. Six titles sold more than a million copies in 2014, with related titles released on the same day counting for one. The combined sales of Yōkai Watch 2: Ganso and Yōkai Watch 2: Honke—3.25 million units between their debut on July 10, 2014 and the end of the year—was the highest among these titles.
