The second 2016 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine revealed a character design for the upcoming One Piece Film Gold movie on December 14. The magazine describes the character as a "mysterious man." The magazine's next issue will reveal more details on the character. Manga creator Eiichiro Oda drew the design for the character.
Eiichiro Oda will serve as the film's executive producer as well as being credited with the original work. Oda also served as the executive producer for the previous film in the franchise, One Piece Film Z.
Hiroaki Miyamoto (One Piece episodes 352-679, assistant director for One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island) is directing the film, and Tsutomu Kuroiwa (live-action Black Butler film, live-action Liar Game: The Final Stage film, live-action The Perfect Insider TV series) is writing the script.
One Piece Film Gold will open in Japan on July 23. Starting on December 18, those who purchase advance tickets for the film will receive a clear file with a "Gold Kintarō Luffy" character design. (The kanji for "kin" in Kintarō means "gold," and the kanji on Luffy's clothing also says "kin" for gold, a reference to a boy in Japanese folklore).
A One Piece film opened every year in Japan between 2000-2009. Since then, aside from One Piece Film Z, (which opened in December 2012) and the 30-minute One Piece 3D: Mugiwara Chase film in 2011, Fuji TV has aired numerous long specials, such as One Piece Episode of Luffy: Hand Island no Bōken, One Piece Episode of Nami: Kōkaishi no Namida to Nakama no Kizuna, One Piece Episode of Merry: Mō Hitori no Nakama no Monogatari, One Piece "3D2Y" Ace no Shi wo Koete! Luffy Nakama to no Chikai, and One Piece Episode of Sabo. A new two-hour special titled One Piece ~Adventure of Nevlandia~ will air on December 19.
