Staff, cast from OVAs return to spinoff series premiering in April

Aniplex began streaming an announcement video (video is region-locked to Japan) on Monday for the television anime adaptation of Shinobu Ohtaka and Yoshifumi Ōtera's spinoff manga Magi: Sinbad no Bōken (Magi: Adventure of Sinbad).

The video features text for the following "arcs" of the manga: Baal arc, Valefor arc, Badr arc, Sasan arc, and Artemyra arc.

The official website for the anime also revealed a new key visual.

The series is slated to air on MBS's "Animeism" block beginning in April.

The manga has already inspired five OVA episodes that have shipped with volumes of the manga. The first OVA episode shipped with the manga's third volume in May 2014, the second episode shipped with the fourth volume in August 2014, the third episode shipped with the special edition of the fifth volume of the manga in December 2014, the fourth episode shipped with the special edition of the sixth volume of the manga this past April, and the fifth episode shipped with the seventh volume in July.

The main staff and cast are returning from the OVA series. Yoshikazu Miyao (Inazuma Eleven, S.A) is directing the series at studio Lay-duce (Classroom Crisis) off scripts by Taku Kishimoto (Haikyu!, Silver Spoon). Souichirou Sako is designing the characters for animation and is also serving as chief animation director, and Tomohiro Ōkubo is composing the music. Other staff members include:

  • Concept Design: Barnstorm Design Labo, Toshinari Tanaka, Kio Edamatsu, Hiroyuki Ōyama
  • Djinn Creature Design: Takashi Tomioka
  • Color Key: Takashi Aoi
  • Director of Photography: Hyeon Dae Song
  • Editing: Takeshi Sadamatsu
  • Sound Director: Satoki Iida

Daisuke Ono is returning from the main Magi television series and the OVAs to play Sinbad. Other returning cast members include Akira Ishida as Yunan, Tomokazu Sugita as Drakon, Ai Kayano as Serendine, Katsuyuki Konishi as Badr, Yōko Hikasa as Esra, Keiji Fujiwara as Hinahoho, Takahiro Sakurai as Jafar, Ayumi Fujimura as Pipirika, Takehito Koyasu as Barbarossa, and Hiroki Touchi as Baal.

The manga is a spinoff of Ohtaka's Magi manga. It takes place 30 years before the events of Magi and focuses on Sinbad's journey to become king.

A 70-page "prototype" of the manga with art by Ōtera was bundled with the first Blu-ray Disc of the Magi anime in 2012. The manga's prologue also ran in Weekly Shonen Sunday later that year. After beginning a full serialization in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine, the manga moved to the publisher's web comic site "Ura Sunday" in 2013. The eighth compiled volume shipped on October 16.

Update: Added more staff members from official website.
