Gainax's Silent Möbius PC Game From 1990 to be Reissued

posted on by Karen Ressler
Limited physical edition slated for September in Japan

Video game publisher D4 Enterprise opened preorders on Tuesday for a new package edition of Gainax's 1990 PC-9801 game Silent Möbius via its online mail-order site. The new version will be compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.

The game's story takes place in 2026. The famous sunken ship Titanic appears in the sky above Tokyo at the same time every day and some kind of barrier keeps the police and army out. The government begins collaborating with Great Britain to gather research on the Titanic from Cabridge University and to call police who specialize in combating the supernatural.

The "Silent Möbius Case: Titanic Reproduction" set will ship in September for 9,801 yen (about US$88) before tax. The game will come in a plastic package made to resemble the 1990 packaging. It will have a reversible jacket with either the PC-9801/X68000 version cover or the FM-TOWNS version cover. It will include a come with a manual, guidebook, and newspaper reproduction.

The set will also come with a collection of Studio Gainax's original drawings of characters and scenery that were adapted into pixel form for the game. The product page teases more bonuses that have not yet been announced.

Silent Möbius will be the 13th package release in D4 Enterprise's "Project EGG" (Engrossing Game Gallery) initiative, which aims to release retro games for PC, usually digitally.

Kia Asamiya launched the Silent Möbius paranormal police manga in 1988 and has since published various spinoffs and side stories. The most recent series, Silent Möbius QD, ran from 2013 to 2015. The original manga deals with Attacked Mystification Police (AMP), an elite all-female unit who protects Tokyo from Lucifer Hawks and other supernatural creatures in the 2020s. The new "special police battle fantasy" manga will feature a "reborn" AMP unit.

Viz published the 12 volumes of the original manga in North America in monthly issues and later in compiled volumes. Udon Entertainment announced in 2009 that it planned to republish the original manga as they were published in Japan, including the later Silent Möbius Tales and Silent Möbius Klein volumes, but the company has since only published four volumes, covering the first story-arc.

The first manga spawned two theatrical anime films in 1991 and 1992 and a 26-episode television anime series in 1998. Streamline Pictures released the first movie, while Bandai Entertainment released both movies and the television series.
