Detective Conan Anime's 20th Anniversary Special Unveils Staff, Story, Visual

2-hour Winter special revisiting 1st episode

The staff of the Detective Conan television anime revealed a visual for Meitantei Conan Episode "One" Chiisakunatta Meitantei (Detective Conan Episode "One": The Great Detective Who Shrank), the show's upcoming two-hour television anime special on Wednesday.

The project also revealed the special's new staff. Original manga creator Gosho Aoyama personally supervised all aspects of the special. Yasuichiro Yamamoto, Hiroshi Kashiwabara, Katsuo Ono, Masatomo Sudo, and Terumitsu Okada are all returning from the television anime as director/scriptwriter, scriptwriter, music composer, character designer, and editor, respectively. Shunichiro Yoshihara (Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, Attack on Titan, Bakuon!!) is the art director. Fusako Nakao (Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare, Garakowa -Restore the World- ) is in charge of color design. Mao Ueki (World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman, Castle Town Dandelion) is the CG director. Siblings Yasuyuki Urakami and Keiko Urakami are in charge of sound direction. TMS V1 Studio is animating the special.

The special will premiere in Japan this winter, with its broadcast date and time to be announced.

The special celebrates the anime's 20th anniversary, and will retell what happened on the day Shinichi's teenaged body was transformed into that of a child. It will add new material that was not in the original manga or "Jet Coaster Satsujin Jiken" (Roller Coaster Murder Incident), the first episode of the television anime two decades ago. The story begins when Shinichi sets up a date with Ran at the Tropical Land amusement park. It follows with Shinichi's encounter with Gin and the others at the park.

Viz publishes the original manga under the title Case Closed in North America (with Shinichi renamed as Jimmy), and it describes the beginning of the story:

Ghastly beheadings, bloody murders, and coldhearted child abductions! Precocious high school student Jimmy Kudo uses his keen powers of observation and astute intuition to solve mysteries that have left law enforcement officials baffled. Hot on the trail of a suspect, Jimmy is accosted from behind and fed a strange chemical which physically transforms him into a grade schooler! Taking on the pseudonym Conan Edogawa, he attempts to track down the people who did this to him. But until he finds a cure for his bizarre condition, Jimmy continues to help the police solve their toughest cases. Can you crack the case before Conan does?

Funimation has been releasing the television anime series in North America, also under the title Case Closed.
