Pokémon Go Players Account For 144 Billion Steps Taken in U.S.

Game may lead to increase in average life expectancy

Microsoft Research published a study on October 6 that revealed that players of Pokémon Go account for an estimated 144 billion steps taken in its first 30 days of release in the United States. The study had a sample size of 1,500 players.

The players queried for the study had an average age of 33, with 36.5% overweight and 28.2% obese. Typical users on average take 7,229 steps daily, 13% more than the control population. The study says that the app could account for an increase in the average life expectancy in the United States of up to 2.825 million years cumulative, although it also notes that this depends on players maintaining their high levels of engagement with the game.

Analytics company Slice Intelligence reported last month that the number of paying players in the United States peaked on July 15 and has since dropped 79 percent.

The Pokémon Go iOS and Android app launched in select countries including the United States on July 6, and has since launched in more than 100 countries and territories. The app is also slated to launch for Apple Watch. The "Pokémon GO Plus" accessory shipped on September 16.
