Hokusai to Meshi Saeareba Manga Gets Live-Action TV Series

Manga centers on cooking ideals of college girl in Tokyo

This year's 12th issue of Kodansha's Young Magazine the 3rd magazine announced on Saturday that Sanami Suzuki's Hokusai to Meshi Saeareba (English title The meal with Hokusai, or lit. All You Need Is A Meal with Hokusai) cooking manga is getting a live-action television adaptation. The magazine will reveal more information about the adaptation in the first 2017 issue, which will ship on December 6.

Suzuki originally launched a Hokusai to Meshi manga in Kadokawa's Samurai A magazine in 2012, but the manga ended at one volume after Samurai A stopped its publication. Suzuki then relaunched the manga in the debut issue of Young Magazine the 3rd in September 2014 under the Hokusai to Meshi Saeareba title. Kodansha published the manga's third volume on April 20, and will publish the fourth volume on December 20.

Hokusai to Meshi Saeareba takes place eight years before Hokusai to Meshi. In the newer series, Bun Yamada moves to Tokyo to go to college, and she brings along her beloved plush toy named Hokusai. Bun has lots of ideas for new recipes, and believes that even if she experiences hardship, as long as she has Hokusai and delicious food, that every day is a happy one. The first volume features recipes for dishes such as "empty can rice," "metamorphosis sandwich," "thermos sweet sake," "meatball spaghetti," "sacred parfait," and "beef sinew curry."

Suzuki's The Little Match Girl (Match Shōjo) manga inspired an anime promotional video earlier this year.
