The January 2017 issue of Gakken's Megami Magazine revealed on Wednesday that the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Reflection anime film project will be two films, with the first film slated for next summer in Japan. The second film has no planned release date, but Seven Arcs Pictures producer Tatsuya Tanaka stated in an interview in the magazine that "there won't be a long wait" for the second film.
In an interview in the same magazine, franchise creator Masaki Tsuzuki stated that the story will be completely new, and will take place three months after Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha the Movie 2nd A's, when Nanoha and the other characters are in the summer of their fifth grade. The events of the story begin when certain incidents begin occurring in Uminari City, as well as in the area around Tokyo, and so Nanoha and the others investigate. The story will feature other new characters besides Amitie and Kirie. The characters' Barrier Jacket costume will also have a completely new design.
The site previously streamed a trailer last month which revealed the film project's summer 2017 opening.
Yukari Tamura, Nana Mizuki, and Kana Ueda reprise their roles as Nanoha Takamachi, Fate T. Harlaown, and Hayate Yagami respectively. Haruka Tomatsu will voice Amitie Florian. Satomi Satou will voice Kirie Florian. Both characters debuted in the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's Portable: The Gears of Destiny PlayStation Portable game in 2011, but have not appeared in any anime in the franchise. Tomatsu and Satou reprise their roles from the game.
Masaki Tsuzuki, the franchise creator and scriptwriter, is credited with the original work, and is also penning the script. Takayuki Hamana (The Prince of Tennis, Library War, Appleseed XIII) is directing the film at Seven Arcs Pictures. Kana Hashidate (Dog Days') is drawing the character designs, and Shochiku is distributing the film.
The Comic Market C91 event at the end of December will have a joint "Nanoha x ViVid Strike!" booth (#2411).
The project was first announced in March 2013 under the title Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The Movie 3rd: Reflection. At the time, it was described as a brand-new story not based on previous material.
