L.A. Film Critics Association Names Shinkai's 'your name.' as Best Animated Film

Red Turtle is runner-up for award that Spirited Away, Princess Kaguya won in previous years

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) awarded Makoto Shinkai's your name. (Kimi no Na wa.) anime film with its Best Animated Film award on Sunday. Michael Dudok de Wit and Studio Ghibli's The Red Turtle is the runner-up for the award. Issey Ogata is also the runner-up for the Best Supporting Actor award, for his performance in Martin Scorsese's Silence, based on Shūsaku Endō's novel.

The LAFCA previously awarded Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away with the Best Animated Film award in 2002, and the film went on to win the Best Animated Feature award in the Academy Awards in 2003. The LAFCA also awarded Isao Takahata's The Tale of the Princess Kaguya as Best Animated Film in 2014.

your name. has earned 19,492,000,000 yen (about US$174 million) as of November 27, surpassing the 19.3 billion yen earnings of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke anime film. The film has also sold 14,986,000 tickets. Shinkai's film is now the the sixth highest-grossing film of all time in Japan, the third highest-grossing Japanese film in Japan, and the third highest-grossing anime film in Japan. The two highest-grossing Japanese films in Japan include Spirited Away (30.8 billion yen) and Howl's Moving Castle (19.6 billion yen). Shinkai's your name. is projected to possibly approach 20 billion yen (US$200 million).

The film ranked #1 at the box office in China this past weekend with the equivalent of US$41 million.
