Shinobi, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, The House of the Dead, Crazy Taxi projects also planned

Entertainment news magazine Variety reported on Monday that Stories International — the joint venture of Sega Group and Hakuhodo DY Group for film and television projects — has partnered with production company Circle of Confusion to adapt Sega's Altered Beast and Streets of Rage game franchises.

Stories International CEO Tomoyo Suzuki, and Circle of Confusion partners Lawrence Mattis and Julian Rosenberg are producing the adaptations, while Evan J. Cholfin, head of development and production at Stories International, is credited as executive producer.

Stories International is aiming to make film and television adaptations of other Sega properties, including Shinobi, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, The House of the Dead, and Crazy Taxi.

Circle of Confusion produces the television and digital projects Fear the Walking Dead, The Talking Dead, Powers, Outcast, and Dirk Gently. Its recent films include Spare Parts, American Ultra, and Mr. Right.

Sega hired Cholfin, a former executive of Break Media, to orchestrate film, television, and digital entertainment projects based on Sega properties in 2014.

Sega released Altered Beast (Jūōki) as an arcade game in 1988. It was ported to various platforms, with the latest one for the Xbox 360 and iOS platform. Sega released the first installment in the Streets of Rage series for the Sega Mega Drive and Sega Genesis in 1991. It spawned two sequels, with the latest game, Streets of Rage 3, released in 1994.
