'your name.' Anime Film Tops China's Box Office Chart in 2nd Weekend

Shinkai's film has earned US$71.0 million after 10 days in China

Entertainment news website Variety reported on Sunday that Makoto Shinkai's your name. film has topped the weekend box office in China for its second weekend in a row. The film was first place in China on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, but fell to second place on Sunday to Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge film.

For the overall Friday-Sunday weekend, your name. earned the equivalent of US$15.1 million in China (compared to Hacksaw Ridge's US$14.2 million in the same time period), according to Ent Group. The film accounted for 25% of the entire Chinese box office earnings on Saturday. your name. has now earned US$71.0 million after 10 days at the Chinese box office.

The film topped the Chinese box office during its opening weekend, earning the equivalent of US$41 million. your name. earned the biggest opening weekend of any Japanese animated film in China — topping last year's Stand By Me Doraemon (US$38.5 million). The film also earned the biggest opening weekend of any hand-drawn animated film in China — topping this year's Chinese film Big Fish & Begonia (US$34.2 million).

In Japan, your name. has earned 20,006,188,400 yen (about US$175.81 million) and sold 15,391,716 tickets as of Tuesday, after 102 days in Japanese theaters. The film is the second highest-grossing Japanese film of all time in Japan, behind Spirited Away, and is the fifth highest-grossing overall film of all time in Japan.
