Manga focuses on Matoi, Melfonsina

The March issue of Kadokawa's Shōnen Ace magazine revealed on Thursday that the magazine will launch a new manga based on SEGA's Phantasy Star Online 2 game in the magazine's next issue in February. The manga is titled Phantasy Star Online 2 Episode 0, and Kiyu Kibako will draw the manga. Kibako posted a preview image of the manga on Twitter on Thursday.

The manga will focus on Matoi, Phantasy Star Online 2's main heroine, but the story will begin with Arks member Melphonshina investigating a planet, and meeting a certain girl.

Sega released the free-to-play Phantasy Star Online 2 role-playing game for Windows PC in Japan in 2012, followed by a PlayStation Vita release in 2013, and an Android and iOS release in April and May 2014, respectively. The game launched on the PlayStation 4 last April, alongside the game's "Episode 4" update. The game has more than 3.5 million registered users.

Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation, a television anime series based on the game, premiered last January. The anime has a completely original story. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired in Japan, and Sentai Filmworks licensed the series for home video.
