Film earns US$18.7 million internationally for global total of US$59.2 million

Entertainment news source The Hollywood Reporter revealed on Sunday that Lionsgate's new Power Rangers film earned US$40.5 million in its opening weekend in the United States, ranking #2 in the box office behind Beauty and the Beast. The film earned US$18.7 million outside of the United States for a global total of US$59.2 million.

The film opened on Friday in 3,693 North American theaters, and it will open in Japan in July.

Saban Entertainment founder Haim Saban said in an interview with Variety last week that there is a "six-movie story arc" planned for the franchise if the film is successful.

Lionsgate describes the film:

Saban's Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.

Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) directed the film. John Gatins (Kong: Skull Island, Real Steel), Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (Dracula Untold), Max Landis (Chronicle), and Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor) wrote the film's script. The film stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, Ludi Lin, R.J. Cyler, Becky Gomez, Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Banks.

Boom! Studios will release the Saban's Power Rangers: Aftershock graphic novel as a sequel to the film on March 29.
