21st Detective Conan Film Sells Record 5 Million Tickets for 6.5 Billion Yen

The Detective Conan: The Crimson Love Letter (Meitantei Conan Kara Kurenai no Love Letter) anime film, the 21st film in the Detective Conan franchise, has earned more than 6.5 billion yen (about US$59 million) as of Sunday. The amount again sets a new record for the Detective Conan film series, after the film broke the previous film's record last week. The film is the fifth film in a row to set a new franchise record.

The film has sold over 5 million tickets since opening in Japan on April 15. The film ranked #6 in its eighth weekend.

The 20th film in the franchise, Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare, earned 6.33 billion yen (about US$56.9 million at present conversion rates). The 19th film, Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno, earned 4.48 billion yen (about US$40.2 million at present conversion rates). As of May 2016, the anime film franchise exceeded 60 billion yen (about US$557.6 million) in total box-office earnings.

Detective Conan: The Crimson Love Letter sold 987,568 tickets and earned 1,286,928,000 yen (about US$11.88 million) in its opening weekend, setting a new opening weekend record for the franchise.

The live-action film adaptation of Miwa Ueda's Peach Girl manga fell from #5 to #7 in its third weekend. The film sold 120,000 tickets and earned 143 million yen (US$1.29 million) on 301 screens on its opening weekend on May 20. Kōji Shintoku (live-action Mars ~Tada, Kimi wo Aishiteru!) directed the film, and Junpei Yamaoka (live-action Gin to Kin drama) wrote the scripts.

The live-action film of Usamaru Furuya's Teiichi no Kuni (Teiichi's Country) manga rose from #9 to #8 in its sixth weekend. The film sold 166,000 tickets, and earned 214 million yen (about US$1.91 million) on its opening weekend. The film opened on April 29. Akira Nagai (Sekai Kara Neko ga Kieta Nara) directed the film, and Yoshihiro Izumi (live-action Death Note, anohana) penned the script.

As of this weekend, Makoto Shinkai's your name. film has earned a cumulative 24.94 billion yen (about US$226 million). It is the #4 highest-earning film of all time in the Japanese box office chart, just below Frozen at #3 with 25.5 billion yen (about US$232 million).
