Anime News Network's coverage of Anime Expo 2017 is sponsored by Aniplex and Yen Press.
Pony Canyon announced at its Anime Expo panel on Saturday the second season of Yuki Yuna Is a Hero will stream with English subtitles this October. The company also promoted the upcoming anime Sanrio Boys, which will premiere in January, but it has not confirmed subtitled streaming or a physical release, as it is in negotiations.
Ponycan USA is selling the full first season of Yuki Yuna Is a Hero on one Blu-ray Disc box set at its Anime Expo booth, and the set will ship on July 10. The new set includes all 12 episodes on three discs with English and Japanese audio and English and Spanish subtitles. The company previously released the series on three Blu-ray Disc/DVD collector's editions in 2015.
The second season will premiere in October in Japan and it will have two parts: Yūki Yūna wa Yūsha de Aru: Washio Sumi no Shō and Yūki Yūna wa Yūsha de Aru: Yūsha no Shō. The first part will be a six-episode recut of the three Yūki Yūna wa Yūsha de Aru: Washio Sumi no Shō films that are screening in Japan. Pony Canyon teased a possible Western release for the films, but not a theatrical release.
The first two films debuted in Japan March and April, and the third will open on July 8. The anime films adapt Takahiro and illustrator BUNBUN's illustrated novel series Washio Sumi wa Yūsha de Aru (Washio Sumi is a Hero). Project 2H is credited as the original creator, Takahiro (Minato Soft) is credited with the original plan designs, and BUNBUN is credited with the original character designs. Seiji Kishi, who directed the first anime season, is the chief director.
The second half of the second season will be a direct sequel to the first season.
The first anime's story takes place in the era of the gods, year 300. Yūna Yūki lives an ordinary life as a second year middle school student, but she's also a member of the "Hero Club," where club activities involve dealing with a mysterious being called "Vertex."
