Masaru Oda's manga based on franchise about school idols debuted in March 2016

Malaysian publisher Gempak Starz announced on Monday that it has licensed Masaru Oda's Love Live! Sunshine!! manga.

The Love Live! Sunshine!! franchise is a sequel and spinoff to the Love Live! School Idol Project franchise, and is set after the story of the first, where the μ's school idol group has already found success in Tokyo and beyond. Love Live! Sunshine!!'s protagonist Chika Takami is inspired by μ's' success, and is driven to find something special within her despite being normal. Like μ's before her, she gathers a group of eight other girls and forms the school idol unit Aqours in Uranohoshi Girls' High School in the town of Numazu.

Oda launched the manga in Kadokawa's Dengeki G's Magazine in March 2016. Kadokawa published the manga's second compiled book volume on July 26.

The first Love Live! Sunshine!! anime premiered in July 2016. The anime's second season will premiere in Japan in October.

The Love Live! Sunshine!! project was first announced in February 2015. The project's three key phrases are "Reader Participation," "Inspired by μ's," and "Seaside Town Setting." Fans chose group's name Aqours by popular vote.

In 2010, the anime studio Sunrise, Lantis, and ASCII Media Works' Dengeki G Magazine launched Love Live! as a self-described "ultimate user-participation project" that lets its fans vote on the future of the fictional idols. The project inspired the first television anime season in 2013, and a second season followed in 2014. The Love Live! The School Idol Movie anime film then premiered in June 2015.
