Film originally slated to open on August 30

Philippine cinema chain SM Cinema revealed on Thursday that it has rescheduled the live-action film of Hideaki Sorachi's Gintama manga to open on September 20. Pioneer Films, the film's Philippine distributor, previously announced in August that the film's opening had been delayed indefinitely. The film was originally slated to open on August 30.

The film opened in Japan on July 14, and has earned a cumulative total of 3,738,366,400 yen (about US$34.40 million). The film earned more than 3 billion yen (about US$27.20 million) after 30 days in theaters. The film had the highest opening two days of any Japanese live-action film in 2017 so far. The film's total box-office earnings are expected to surpass 5 billion yen (US$44.7 million).

Sorachi began the manga in 2004 and it continues to be ranked among the top-selling manga in Japan. The manga has more than 50 million copies in print in Japan.
