One Piece 'Holographic' 3DCG Stage Event Premieres in 2018

This year's 43rd issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine revealed on Monday that the previously announced One Piece "holographic" stage event has been delayed to an early 2018 premiere at the DMM VR Theater in Yokohama. The work will be titled "One Piece Dramatic Stage THE METAL ~Tsuioku no Marineford~" (Recollection of Marineford). The work will feature an original story and new characters.
The production was originally revealed in late 2016 with a planned debut in 2017. To celebrate the project, the theater screened the "Mugiwara no Ichimi vs Kaigun vs Ōka Shichi Bukai Holographic Battle Theater Encore in Yokohama" (Straw Hats vs. Navy vs Seven Warlords of the Sea Holographic Battle Theater Encore in Yokohama) hologram screening from November-December 2016. The work was an enhanced update of a 2014 "hologram" screening that ran in another theater in Tokyo's Odaiba area.
The DMM VR Theater is a venue that uses "holographic" technology for virtual concerts and other events. The theater uses the same translucent "Pepper's ghost" screens that are used in concerts by Hatsune Miku and other virtual Vocaloid idols. However, the theater uses multiple screens to add depth to its performances.
The theater in Yokohama previously screened a The Glass Mask Year 3 Class D theatrical work starting on July 22. The theater has also screened a benefit concert featuring manga creator Takeshi Konomi alongside several characters from his The Prince of Tennis manga, as well as other events for franchises such as Aikatsu Stars!, Aikatsu!, Sword Art Online, Precure, and Street Fighter V.
