Captain Tsubasa: Dream Team Mobile Game Gets Global Release

posted on by Karen Ressler
Game launches in English, 5 other languages in December

Mobile game developer KLab Inc. announced on Monday that it has opened preregistration for a global version of its Captain Tsubasa: Dream Team smartphone game. The company plans to release the game in 135 countries and regions in December. The game will be available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Traditional Chinese.

KLab posted an English-subtitled video with a message from original Captain Tsubasa manga creator Yōichi Takahashi.

The game is free to play with in-game purchases. Players are able to create a "dream team" of characters in the series and compete against players worldwide. There is also a story mode where players can "experience all the greatest scenes from the original Captain Tsubasa storyline and more."

The iOS and Android game launched in Japan on June 13 and has reached 4 million downloads, including players who have downloaded the game more than once.

Takahashi's original 37-volume Captain Tsubasa manga ran in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1981 to 1988, and it inspired three television anime series, four anime films, several OVAs, and an upcoming stage play. The manga is available in about 20 countries — including France, Italy, and Mexico — and an Arabic edition shipped in the Middle East in January.

The manga spawned additional sequels and spinoff series, including Captain Tsubasa: World Youth Tokubetsu-hen Saikyō no Teki! Oranda Youth, Captain Tsubasa: World Youth, Captain Tsubasa: Road to 2002, Captain Tsubasa Golden-23, Captain Tsubasa: Kaigai Gekitō-hen in Calcio, Captain Tsubasa: Kaigai Gekitō-hen En La Liga, and the ongoing Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun. In total, the manga series has 100 compiled volumes and 70 million copies in print. The manga has also spawned three novel volumes.
