Hakuōki Gets New Stage Musical in April

Masanari Wada stars as Hijikata Toshizō

The official website for Marvelous, Inc.'s series of Hakuōki stage musicals revealed on Thursday that the series will receive a new stage musical focusing on the character Hijikata Toshizō. Masanari Wada (Touken Ranbu stage play's Heshikiri Hasebe, Yowamushi Pedal stage plays' Shunsuke Imaizumi) will replace Gaku Matsuda to star as Hijikata Toshizō.

The musical will run from April to May at Shinkobe Oriental Theater in Kobe and have special performances at Meijiza theater in Tokyo.

Daisuke Nishida (Sengoku Basara, Blue Exorcist stage plays) is directing the musical, and Nobuhiro Mōri is returning to write the script. Toshihiko Sahashi is returning to compose the music. Shinnosuke Motoyama and Yasuhiro Roppongi are again in charge of choreography and sword battles, respectively.

The first Hakuōki stage musical debuted in 2012, and the seventh installment, titled Musical Hakuōki: Shinsengumi Kitan (Hakuōki: Stories of the Shinsengumi; seen above), ran in Tokyo in January 2016.

The Musical Hakuōki Haku-Myu Live 2 performance ran in Kyoto and Tokyo in August 2016. The Musical Hakuōki Haku-Myu Live performances are similar to normal musicals in that the actors are in costume and perform on stage with choreography, but there is a minimal set and the audience stands throughout the performance while holding glow sticks, similar to a concert. The Haku-Myu Live shows are also not part of the main numbered stage musicals in the series.

The story of the game franchise and its anime adaptations centers around the historical Shinsengumi samurai group in Kyoto during the 19th century.
