The official website for Marvelous, Inc.'s series of Hakuōki stage musicals revealed a visual for the planned new stage musical last week. The visual features Masanari Wada (Touken Ranbu stage play's Heshikiri Hasebe, Yowamushi Pedal stage plays' Shunsuke Imaizumi) in costume as Hijikata Toshizō, the central character of the new musical.
Wada replaces Gaku Matsuda in the role.
The site also revealed other cast members, including:
- Kentarō Kanesaki as Amagiri Kyūju
- Kentarō Menjō as Shiranui Kyō
- Masataka Nakagauchi as Kazama Chikage
The musical will run from April 21 to 23 at the Shinkobe Oriental Theater in Kobe, and will a performances at the Meijiza Theater in Tokyo from April 28 to May 1.
Daisuke Nishida (Sengoku Basara, Blue Exorcist stage plays) is directing the musical, and Nobuhiro Mōri is returning to write the script. Toshihiko Sahashi is returning to compose the music. Shinnosuke Motoyama and Yasuhiro Roppongi are again in charge of choreography and sword battles, respectively.
The first Hakuōki stage musical debuted in 2012, and the seventh installment, titled Musical Hakuōki: Shinsengumi Kitan (Hakuōki: Stories of the Shinsengumi), ran in Tokyo in January 2016.
The Musical Hakuōki Haku-Myu Live 2 performance ran in Kyoto and Tokyo in August 2016. The Musical Hakuōki Haku-Myu Live performances are similar to normal musicals in that the actors are in costume and perform on stage with choreography, but there is a minimal set and the audience stands throughout the performance while holding glow sticks, similar to a concert. The Haku-Myu Live shows are also not part of the main numbered stage musicals in the series.
The story of the game franchise and its anime adaptations centers around the historical Shinsengumi samurai group in Kyoto during the 19th century.
