Sega announced details on new installments on its Sonic the Hedgehog franchise — including a new game, a new version of the Sonic Mania game, and a new Sonic Mania Adventures animated series of shorts — at the SXSW event last Friday.

Sega unveiled a video that teased a new Sonic the Hedgehog racing game. The letter "R" highlighted in the video is the same font as the Sonic R 1997 racing game. Sega released the Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed racing game in 2012.

Sega will release an update of the Sonic Mania game titled Sonic Mania Plus this summer. It will have a physical release for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Switch, but those who already own the Sonic Mania game will be able to update their game with the new content for free.

The new game will add Ray the Flying Squirrel and Mighty the Armadillo as playable characters, along with a four-player competitive mode, a new Encore Mode, and remixed versions of previous levels. The new physical release will include holographic packaging, a 32-page art book, and a reversible Sega Genesis cover.

Sega will begin releasing the Sonic Mania Adventures animated series this year for free on YouTube. The series will have five-minute episodes.

Sega released the Sonic Mania game last August for the PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. The latest game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, Sonic Forces, launched for the Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC last November.

The franchise is inspiring a Paramount Pictures film adaptation that is slated for November 15, 2019.
