posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Main cast performs opening, Ketsumeishi performs ending for series premiering in July

The official website for Shinya! Tensai Bakabon (Late Night! Genius Bakabon), a new television anime adaptation of Fujio Akatsuka's classic comedy manga Tensai Bakabon, revealed the anime's opening and ending theme song artists on Friday.

The anime's main cast members Arata Furuta, Miyu Irino, Noriko Hidaka, and Ai Nonaka will perform the opening theme song "Baka-Bonsoir!" as the unit "B.P.O -Bakabon-no Papa Organization-." Voice cast members Toshiyuki Morikawa, Akira Ishida, and Takahiro Sakurai will feature in an interlude. TECHNOBOYS PULCRAFT GREEN-FUND is writing, composing, and arranging the song. Hip hop group Ketsumeishi (Crayon Shin-chan Bakusui! Yumemi World Dai Totsugeki) will perform the as-yet untitled ending theme song.

The anime's cast includes:

  • Arata Furuta as Bakabon's father
  • Miyu Irino as Bakabon
  • Noriko Hidaka as Bakabon's mother
  • Ai Nonaka as Hajime, Bakabon's younger brother
  • Akira Ishida as Rerere no Ojisan
  • Toshiyuki Morikawa as Honkan, the local police officer
  • Takahiro Sakurai as Unagi-Inu

Toru Hosokawa (Polar Bear's Café script, Baka Mukashi Banashi Gekijōban ~Jijii Wars~ director) is directing the anime and penning the scripts at animation studio Pierrot+, with Takashi Yamamoto (A Dark Rabbit Has Seven Lives, Final Approach, Onigiri) as assistant director. Takaaki Wada (Brave Story, Tokyo Ghoul animation director) is designing the characters. Avex Pictures is producing the music, and Hiromi Kikuta is the sound director.

The anime will premiere in July at a late-night time slot. The original family comedy manga centers on an idiotic boy and his father.

Akatsuka launched the Tensai Bakabon manga series in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine in 1967. The manga already inspired four television anime series between 1971 and 2000, as well as a full-length anime film in 2015 titled Tensai Bakavon ~Yomigaeru Flanders no Inu~. Akatsuka died in 2008 due to esophageal cancer. His life inspired a biographical film in 2011.

A third live-action television special based on the manga will air as part of NHK's "Golden Learning Week" campaign, which will take place between April 30 and May 6. NTV aired the first live-action special, Tensai Bakabon ~ Kazoku no Kizuna (Bonds of Family), in March 2016. The second special, Tensai Bakabon 2, aired in January 2017.
