Frontwing's Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Anime Kickstarter Adds Stretch Goal for English Dub

US$120,000 goal adds dub to region-free Blu-ray Discs

Frontwing announced on Wednesday that it has added a stretch goal of US$120,000 or 700 backers to its Kickstarter campaign for the anime adaptation of its Grisaia: Phantom Trigger game to fund an English dub for the series. The company noted that even if the campaign does not reach this stretch goal before it ends on September 3, the staff believe that the project will hit the goal through BackerKit. The English dub is planned for release on the campaign's Blu-ray Disc releases, which the company also confirmed will be region-free.

As of press time, the campaign has raised US$78,266 of its initial US$100,000 goal. The Kickstarter campaign launched for pre-ordering Blu-ray Disc releases of the anime on July 6. If the campaign is successful, Blu-ray Discs are slated to ship by this December. Each episode will be 60 minutes long and adapt one volume of the original visual novel.

The anime's first two episodes are slated to debut simultaneously this year.

Frontwing announced at Anime Expo in July that it will release the anime in English. The anime will be available on streaming platforms, but Frontwing has not yet determined the platforms.

The anime's cast includes:

  • Maaya Uchida as Rena
  • Ayane Sakura as Tohka
  • Kaori Nazuka as Chris
  • Atsumi Tanezaki as Murasaki
  • Yoshino Nanjō as Maki
  • Mikako Izawa as Shiori Arisaka

The cast members are reprising their roles from the game.

Anime director Tensho founded the new animation studio Bibury Animation Studio to produce the anime as its first work. Akio Watanabe, the original character designer for the Grisaia franchise, is serving as the anime's character designer and chief animation director. Ryuichiro Yamakawa is producing the anime. Frontwing is funding the anime on its own instead of using a production committee.

Maon Kurosaki is performing the opening song, and Nanjō is performing the ending theme song. Grisaia series scriptwriter Yoshikazu Kuwashima wrote the lyrics for both theme songs, and Grisaia series theme song composer Hitoshi Fujima (Elements Garden) returned to compose the songs.

Tensho's previous directorial credits include Kinmoza! Kiniro + Mosaic and its sequel, all three Grisaia anime (The Fruit of Grisaia, The Labyrinth of Grisaia, The Eden of Grisaia), and both seasons of Rewrite. He has also done animation and character design under the name Motoki Tanaka.

Frontwing released the first two volumes of the game both in Japanese and with English text for PC in April 2017. "Volume 5" of the game will launch in Japan on July 27, and it is slated to launch in English this summer.

Video game and visual novel translation company Sekai Project launched Frontwing's The Fruit of Grisaia on Steam in 2015 after meeting its Kickstarter goal for a Western release of the game trilogy. Frontwing and Sekai Project have also released other two games, The Labyrinth of Grisaia and The Eden of Grisaia, on Steam. Frontwing released the The Fruit of Grisaia bonus episode "The Leisure of Grisaia" on Steam in May 2016.

All three of the main games inspired anime and manga adaptations.
