New Touken Ranbu Musical Announced for 2019

Also: 3rd stage musical gets rerun from January-March

The official website for the Touken Ranbu musicals announced on Monday that the new Musical Touken Ranbu Higekiri Hizamaru Sōki Shutsujin 2019 (Higekiri and Hizamaru Riding Out Together) performance will run in Tokyo in 2019. The main cast will include Hiroki Miura as Higekiri and Akira Takano as Hizamaru.

Isamu Kayano is returning to direct the play, and Chūji Mikasano (Tokyo Ghoul anime) is writing the script. Shinnosuke Motoyama (Hakuōki, Vampire Knight musicals) is in charge of choreography and staging.

In addition, the website revealed that Touken Ranbu Mihotose no Komoriuta, the franchise's third stage musical, will have a new run from January to March 2019. The play will have two parts, and the second part will feature a performance with new songs, costumes, and staging.

The cast members are reprising their roles except for Makishima.

The new performances of Touken Ranbu Mihotose no Komoriuta will run at The Galaxy Theatre in Tokyo from January 20 to February 3, followed by Sankei Hall Breeze in Osaka from February 8-11, Kyoto Gekijoō in Kyoto from February 17 to March 3, and Tokyo Dome City Hall in Tokyo from March 15-24.

The play first ran in Japan from March to April 2017.

Touken Ranbu - Atsukashiyama Ibun, the first stage musical, held its first trial performance in 2015, with its debut run held from May to June 2016. The second musical, Touken Ranbu - Bakumatsu Tenrōden, ran from September to October 2016, with a final performance in Tokyo in November 2016. Touken Ranbu - Tsuwamono Domo ga Yume no Ato, the fourth stage musical, debuted in December and ran through January. The fifth stage musical, Touken Ranbu:The Musical "Musubi no Hibiki, Hajimari no Ne", debuted on March 24 and had its final performance on May 6. The fifth musical will get 4DX screenings on November 9.

The related "Kashū Kiyomitsu Solo Performance," which featured actor Ryūji Satō in live performances as his character Kashū Kiyomitsu ran in Tokyo on September 12-17, Miyagi on September 20-21, Osaka on October 6-8, and then Hokkaido on October 13. The musicals ran a similar event last year.

The franchise is also inspiring a separate series of stage plays. The fifth stage play ran from June 2 to July 29.
