Grisaia: Phantom Trigger Anime Gets Theatrical Screening Next Spring

posted on by Jennifer Sherman
Anime's 1st 2 episodes slated to debut simultaneously this year

The 15th chapter of Shu Hirose's manga adaptation of Frontwing's Grisaia: Phantom Trigger game revealed on Monday that the anime adaptation of the game will open in theaters in spring 2019.

Hirose launched the manga on Akita Shoten's Manga Cross website in August 2017, and the third compiled book volume will ship on December 20.

As of June, the anime's first two episodes are slated to debut simultaneously this year, and region-free Blu-ray Discs are slated to ship by this December. The English dub will be included on the Blu-ray Disc release — the staff have not said if the inclusion of the dub will lead to a delay in the release. Each episode will be 60 minutes long and will adapt one volume of the original visual novel.

The anime's cast includes:

Yoshino Nanjō as Maki

Mikako Izawa as Shiori Arisaka

Maaya Uchida as Rena

Ayane Sakura as Tohka

Kaori Nazuka as Chris

Atsumi Tanezaki as Murasaki

Tsubasa Yonaga as Haruto Aoi

Frontwing's Kickstarter campaign for the anime ended in September with US$109,754. The project surpassed its original goal of US$100,000 earlier that month to fund the anime. The campaign had 720 backers, more than the minimum 700 needed for the English dub stretch goal.

Anime director Tensho founded the new animation studio Bibury Animation Studio to produce the anime as its first work. Akio Watanabe, the original character designer for the Grisaia franchise, is serving as the anime's character designer and chief animation director. Ryuichiro Yamakawa is producing the anime. Frontwing is funding the anime on its own instead of using a production committee.

Maon Kurosaki is performing the opening song, and Nanjō is performing the ending theme song. Grisaia series scriptwriter Yoshikazu Kuwashima wrote the lyrics for both theme songs, and Grisaia series theme song composer Hitoshi Fujima (Elements Garden) returned to compose the songs.

Tensho's previous directorial credits include Kinmoza! Kiniro + Mosaic and its sequel, all three Grisaia anime (The Fruit of Grisaia, The Labyrinth of Grisaia, The Eden of Grisaia), and both seasons of Rewrite. He has also done animation and character design under the name Motoki Tanaka.

Frontwing released the first two volumes of the game both in Japanese and with English text for PC in April 2017. "Volume 5" of the game launched in Japan and in English on July 27.

Video game and visual novel translation company Sekai Project launched Frontwing's The Fruit of Grisaia on Steam in 2015 after meeting its Kickstarter goal for a Western release of the game trilogy. Frontwing and Sekai Project have also released other two games, The Labyrinth of Grisaia and The Eden of Grisaia, on Steam. Frontwing released the The Fruit of Grisaia bonus episode "The Leisure of Grisaia" on Steam in May 2016.

All three of the main games inspired anime and manga adaptations.
