Castlevania's Adi Shankar to Develop Devil May Cry Animated Series

Shankar: series will "join Castlevania in what we're now calling the bootleg multiverse"

Adi Shankar, executive producer for Netflix's Castlevania animated series, confirmed with video game news website IGN on Friday that he is developing an animated series based on CAPCOM's Devil May Cry game franchise. Shankar stated the series "will join Castlevania in what we're now calling the bootleg multiverse."

Shankar told IGN, "I've acquired [the Devil May Cry] rights myself so the jabronis in Hollywood can't f*** this one up too." Shankar told IGN he attributed the announcement to the success of the Castlevania animated series, stating it "really over-performed."

Shankar also posted about the news on Twitter on Friday.

The Devil May Cry game series previously inspired a 12-episode television anime series by Madhouse in 2007. ADV Films and later Funimation released the series on home video. Crunchyroll began streaming the anime in June.

The most recent release in the Devil May Cry game series, Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition, launched in June 2015 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. This edition is an updated version of the original 2008 Devil May Cry 4 PC/Xbox 360 game. CAPCOM released the Devil May Cry HD Collection set for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in North America on March 13. The collection contains the first three games in the series.

The Devil May Cry 5 game will launch on March 8, 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Devil May Cry celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2016. The game series has also inspired novels, manga, and stage play crossover with Sengoku Basara. A new Devil May Cry: The Live Hacker stage play will run in Tokyo in March.
