posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
26-episode TV series based on Atlus' RPG aired from April through September

Aniplus-Asia began streaming an English-subtitled promotional video for the PERSONA 5 the Animation: Dark Sun television anime special on Wednesday. The video reveals that Aniplus-Asia will air the anime on January 1 at 11:30 p.m. GMT +8.

The special will premiere in Japan on December 30.

Aniplex of America describes the story of the television series based on Atlus' role-playing game:

Ren Amamiya is about to enter his second year after transferring to Shujin Academy in Tokyo.
Following a particular incident, his Persona awakens, and together with his friends they form the “Phantom Thieves of Hearts” to reform hearts of corrupt adults by stealing the source of their distorted desires.
Meanwhile, bizarre and inexplicable crimes have been popping up one after another...
Living an ordinary high school life in Tokyo during the day, the group maneuvers the metropolitan city as Phantom Thieves after hours.
Let the curtain rise for this grand, picaresque story!

The 26-episode series premiered on April 7 and aired through September. Aniplus-Asia aired a simulcast of the anime in Southeast Asia.

Masashi Ishihama (From the New World, Kamichu!) directed PERSONA 5 the Animation, and the game franchise's producer Katsura Hashino is credited with the original story concept. Satomi Ishikawa (Convenience Store Boy Friends) adapted Shigenori Soejima's original game character designs for animation. Kazuma Kaneko is credited for having drawn the original demon designs from the game. Shinichi Inotsume (Persona 5 the Animation -The Day Breakers-, Hayate the Combat Butler, Sket Dance) was in charge of the series scripts. Shoji Meguro returned from the game to compose the anime's music. Lyn performed both opening theme songs and both ending theme songs.

The latest entry in the Persona role-playing game series shipped for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in Japan on September 15, 2016. The game shipped in North America on April 4, 2017 after a delay. The game featured animation sequences from the Production I.G studio.

The earlier Persona 5 the Animation -The Day Breakers- television anime special by A-1 Pictures aired on September 3, 2016. The special recounts the prologue story of the young thief organization at the center of the game.
