Gunslinger Girl author launched series in 2014

This year's 12th issue of Shogakukan's Weekly Big Comic Spirits magazine revealed on Monday that Yu Aida's 1518! (pronounced Ichi Go Ichi Hachi) manga will end in its next chapter, which Shogakukan will publish in the 15th issue of Weekly Big Comic Spirits on March 11.

The manga's story centers around Sachi Maruyama, a girl who has just entered high school. In her new school, she finds that no club activities really interest her, so she is invited by an upperclassman from her middle school — now the student council president of her high school — to help with student council activities. There, she finds Karasuya, a boy she had met three years ago on a baseball field.

Aida launched the manga in Weekly Big Comic Spirits in August 2014, and the series has gone on hiatus several times. After the most recent hiatus in October 2016, the series resumed in March 2017 as a monthly series. Shogakukan published the manga's sixth compiled volume in September 2018.

Aida ended his Gunslinger Girl manga in September 2012. The manga inspired two anime series and an original video anime. ADV released part of the manga in North America, and then Seven Seas re-released the entire series in omnibus form in 2011-2013.

Update: Aida said on his Twitter account on Monday that there many more things he wanted to write for the series. He added that he will comment again after finishing work on the final chapter and calming down. Aida also confirmed that the series' seventh compiled book volume will be its last. Aida further added that he has been moving towards the end of the series for some time, and he has recently been coming to terms emotionally with the end thanks to everyone's support.
