Animator and bento box artist Mari Miyazawa will appear at London's Royal Society on Friday, Birmingham's Flatpack Festival on Sunday

Anime UK News reports that Mari Miyazawa, a stop-motion animator and bento box (lunch box) artist, will give a talk in London on this Friday (May 3), and present workshops in Birmingham on this coming Sunday (May 5).

Miyazawa is described in the London event's publicity as "a leading bento arranger and animation filmmaker whose work includes short films such as Twins in Bakery (2013)... (She has) invented an illustrative genre of oekaki-ben (picture bento) in which food is arranged to resemble an intricately decorated scene or landscape."

The first of her events will be a free talk at the Royal Society near the Mall (directions) on Friday May 3 at 6.30 pm. Next she will appear at Birmingham's Flatpack Festival, running in Birmingham on Sunday May 5 (directions). Miyazawa will host workshops from 12.30 pm to 1.50 p.m. (for younger participants) and again from 4.30 p.m. to 5.50 p.m. (for adults).

The London event on Friday is called "The Culinary Microcosm of the Japanese Lunch Box"; it is free but tickets must be booked here. The event is described as "a talk about the development of vibrant bento creations in Japan... Miyazawa will also provide an introduction to turning ingredients into edible characters, revealing how her ideas attain the balance between nutrition and visual appeal."

The workshops at Birmingham's Flatpack Festival on Sunday will demonstrate "how to create Character Bento - the art of turning traditional Japanese lunch boxes into fun, edible characters."

Miyazawa has a website here and a YouTube channel here; the website has an English-language option.
