film opens in Japan on August 30

Anime News Network's coverage of Anime Expo 2019 is sponsored by Yen Press.

Crunchyroll announced at Anime Expo on Saturday that it is "bringing over" the Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o! Kurenai Densetsu (KONOSUBA - God's blessing on this wonderful world! Crimson Legend) anime film based on Natsume Akatsuki's Konosuba - God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! light novel series. The company did not state if it will stream the film on its website or release the film in theaters, but stated it will reveal more details in the future.

The film will open in Japan on August 30. Takaomi Kanasaki is returning from the previous two anime seasons to direct the film at J.C. Staff (Studio DEEN animated the two TV anime series). Makoto Uezu is returning to write the scripts, Koichi Kikuta is returning to adapt Kurone Mishima's original character designs for animation, and Masato Kōda is returning to compose the music. Machico will return to perform the film's theme song. Ai Kayano, Rie Takahashi, and Sora Amamiya also return to perform the ending song for the film as their respective characters. The film will feature a returning cast.

The original light novels center on Kazuma, a shut-in student who dies in a traffic accident, but meets the goddess Aqua after death. He is given the chance to reincarnate in a fantasy world and can keep one thing with him. When he decides to choose Aqua herself, they are both transported to their new lives. The pair go on quests to earn just enough to buy food, shelter, and clothing, and eventually hire the sorceress Megumin and swordswoman Darkness, who they quickly learn are just as useless as they are.

The original light novels inspired two television anime seasons. The first season premiered in January 2016, and the second season premiered in January 2017. Crunchyroll streamed both seasons as they aired in Japan, and debuted an English dub for the first season on January 15.

Yen Press is releasing the original light novels and Masahito Watari's manga adaptation in English. The company has also licensed the Konosuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World! spinoff novel series.
