Warner Bros., New Line Cinema's parent company, acquired the film rights for Space Invaders in 2014. At the time, Warner Bros. attached producers Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend, Constantine, Paranormal Activity), Joby Harold, and Tory Tunnell to the proposed project, with Matt Schwartz of Weed Road Safe House Pictures and Warner Bros.' Space Invaders debuted in arcades in Japan in 1978, followed by its introduction in American arcades later that same year. The iconic game puts players in control of a cannon guarding four bases from slowly descending rows of aliens.
