Oldboy Limited Four-Disc Blu-ray Set Due on September 23

posted on by Andrew Osmond
Extras include numerous commentaries, hardbound book and two other 'Vengeance' films by director

Park Chan-Wook's South Korean film Oldboy is now in limited release in UK cinemas, in a newly mastered 4K restoration. The film is based on the Japanese manga Old Boy.

In addition, the Arrow website is listing a four-disc Blu-ray Limited Edition of the film, to be released on September 23. The set will contain the 4K restoration of Oldboy. It will also contain Chan-Wook's films Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Lady Vengeance, plus the feature-length documentary Old Days. Additionally, the set will come with a hundred-page hardbound book including new writings on the film and archival articles.

The full list of further extras is given here, including four audio commentaries on Oldboy involving the director, cast and film critics; deleted scenes; cast and crew interviews; a three-and-a-half hour video diary on making Oldboy; and further audio commentaries on the other films.

Arrow Films describes the story:

"Based on the Japanese manga of the same name, the film tells the horrific tale of Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), a businessman who is inexplicably kidnapped and imprisoned in a grim hotel room-like cell for 15 years, without knowing his captor or the reason for his incarceration.

Eventually released, he learns of his wife's murder and embarks on a quest for revenge whilst also striking up a romance with a young, attractive sushi chef, Mi-do (Kang Hye-jung). He eventually finds his tormentor, but their final encounter will yield yet more unimaginable horrors..."

The original manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi has the protagonist imprisoned for a different number of years and does not have the Korean film's added plot twist ending.
