Shizumaru Hisame to join lineup as free DLC character in September

SNK announced on Sunday at the Evolution Championship Series 2019 fighting game tournament that it will release one new character each month for the rest of the year for its Samurai Shodown (Samurai Spirits) game.

The new characters announced include Rimururu on August 7, Basara in October, Kazuki Kazama in November, and Wan-Fu in December. Shizumaru Hisame will join the lineup as a free DLC character in September. The character Mina Makijina will join the game as part of the Season 2 DLC in 2020. The Season 2 DLC will feature three other characters.

The game launched for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in Japan on June 27, and in the West on June 25. The Nintendo Switch and PC versions will follow in winter 2019. The arcade version of the game will debut this summer.

The game features three new playable fighters: Darli Dagger, Wu-Ruixiang, and Yashamaru Kurama. SNK developed the game using Unreal Engine 4. The game has Japanese audio with subtitles in English, Japanese, traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, Korean, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Pan-American Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese.

The game is set between the events of the original game and Samurai Shodown V. The game's fighters include the following characters from previous games in the franchise: Haōmaru, Nakoruru, Earthquake, Galford, Hanzo Hattori, Tam Tam, Kyoshiro Senryo, Jubei Yagyu, Ukyo Tachibana, Charlotte, Genjuro Kibagami, Shiki, and Yoshitora Tokugawa.

The fighting game series launched in 1993. The most recent game in the franchise, Samurai Shodown: Sen, launched for arcades in April 2008. The game later received a release for Xbox 360 in Japan in December 2009 and in North America in March 2010. SNK and Digital Eclipse will release a Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection for the PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC (via Steam) this fall.
