JIN's Kagerou Daze No.9 Project Screens in January 2020

Sayuki handles character design

Kagerou Project creator JIN revealed on Twitter on Thursday that his new tentatively titled Kagerou Daze No.9 project will screen in January 2020. Sayuki is handling the character design. The account shared a new character visual.

The spinoff work will tell a story from an angle never seen before. The story will be set three years later in the series' world. JIN revealed in June that he would like to express this project through manga, anime, and music.

JIN's Kagerou Project began as a Vocaloid song series that JIN wrote and composed in 2011. JIN launched the Kagerou Daze novel series in May 2012, with illustrations by Sidu. Kadokawa published the eighth and final volume in December 2017.

JIN and Mahiro Sato launched the Kagerou Daze manga adaptation of the novels in Kadokawa's Monthly Comic Gene magazine in June 2012. The manga ended in Kadokawa's Monthly Comic Gene magazine in February. The manga's 13th and final compiled book volume shipped on March 27.

The series inspired a 12-episode television anime adaptation titled Mekaku City Actors in 2014. Crunchyroll streamed the anime as it aired in Japan. A short anime film titled MX4D Kagerou Daze -in a days- opened in Japan in November 2016. Sidu, the illustrator of the novels and music videos, made her directorial debut with the film.

Yen Press publishes both the light novel series and manga in North America. The company published the novel series' eighth volume and the manga's 12th volume in April.

JIN, anime writer Dai Sato (Eureka Seven, Wolf's Rain, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop), and Taichi Hashimoto (revisions) are also credited with the original story concepts for Listeners, a new project that combines rock music and anime. A website and Twitter account for the project opened on June 9.
