In a press release, the British Film Institute (BFI) has announced that there will be a two-month celebration of a century of anime at London's BFI Southbank (pictured) in April and May 2022. Further details of this season will be announced soon.

The season is part of the BFI's celebration of Japanese cinema which was originally intended to run in British cinemas in 2020. Those plans were suspended because of the Covid outbreak in Britain, although Japanese films were streamed on the online BFI Player.

The BFI's planned programme also includes a season of live-action cinema from October 18 to December 30 2021 at the BFI Southbank, including contextual introductions and events. There will also be screenings and special events at cinemas nationwide. These will include a UK-wide reissue of Akira Kurosawa's classic 1954 film The Seven Samurai from October 29 2021, while the season at the BFI Southbank will include a "J-Horror Weekender" on October 29 to 31 2021.
