Nintendo Teases Next Gaming System After Switch

posted on by Alex Mateo
Nintendo confirms integrated hardware-software initiative for Switch successor

Nintendo confirmed in its second quarter financial report for the fiscal year ending in March 2022 that its next gaming system will be an "integrated hardware-software" initiative. The company describes the next gaming system in the same terms as the Nintendo Switch, as well as the combination of the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS before. Nintendo lists the next gaming system with a "20XX" release.

Nintendo intends to make current Nintendo Accounts compatible with the next gaming system. The company seeks a cycle with its integrated hardware-software business and provision of services and content based on Nintendo accounts. Nintendo revealed that there are over 250 million Nintendo Accounts on the Switch with people from 164 countries and regions worldwide registered. There are more than 32 million subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online.

Nintendo previously teased its next system in September 2020.

The Switch hybrid home and handheld console debuted on March 3, 2017. As of September 30, Nintendo has moved a total of 92.87 million Switch units worldwide, surpassing the Nintendo 3DS and Game Boy Advance's lifetime numbers. The Switch is the company's fourth best-selling console behind the Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, and Game Boy.

The Switch's OLED Model features a bigger 7-inch (18-centimeter) OLED screen, a wider stand that supports more viewing angles than the previous version's kickstand, a dock with a wired LAN port, 64 GB of internal storage, and enhanced audio. The new model is available in white and neon red/neon blue colors. The original Switch model has a smaller 6.2-inch (16-centimeter) display, and the Switch Lite model has a 5.5-inch (14-centimeter) display.

Nintendo will only be able to produce about 24 million units of the Nintendo Switch, about 20% less than its previously planned production estimate of 30 million units, for the fiscal year ending in March 2022. This number includes the newer Switch OLED model and Switch Lite consoles. Shortages of semiconductors and other electronic parts, as well as strong demand for the Switch, are the cause of the lower production.
