Busan Film Festival to Host Japanese Animation Special Program, Screening 13 Films

The 31st Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) announced on Monday that it will screen films in a new category called "Japanese Animation Special: Masterpieces of Madness, Exhilarating Prospects 12+1." The category will screen the following films out of competition:

• The White Snake Enchantress (1958)
• Belladonna of Sadness (1973)
• Phoenix 2772 (Space Firebird) (1980)
• Angel's Egg (1985)
• Memories (1995)
• Metropolis (2001)
• Mind Game (2004)
• Kakurenbo (2004)
• ghost – end of night (2026)
• Shiranui (2026)
• We Are Aliens (2026)
• A New Dawn (2026)

The King and the mockingbird (1952, 1980), a French fantasy cartoon which was a major influence on Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, will also screen in the section.

The 30th Busan International Film Festival, which was held on September 17-26, screened the live-action film of Makoto Shinkai's 5 Centimeters Per Second anime film in its Open Cinema section.

The 29th Busan International Film Festival screened the live-action film of Masayuki Kusumi and Jiro Taniguchi's Kodoku no Gourmet (Solitary Gourmet) manga, The Colors Within anime feature film, and the Ghost Cat Anzu French-Japanese animated film.
