TV Asahi announced on Thursday that the new Indian-animated Obocchama-kun show based on Yoshinori Kobayashi's Obocchama-kun manga will air in Japan in 2027 under the title Obocchama-kun Reborn.
The company unveiled a teaser promotional video and visual:

Chie Kōjiro is reprising the role of the protagonist Obocchama-kun from the original 1989 anime.
Sidheswar Shukla directed the show at Green Gold Animation. The series has 26 episodes (22 minutes each), and is targeted at children 6-11 years old. The new anime project is being carried out together with Sony Pictures Networks India, Sony Group's local subsidiary. Under the supervision of Yoshinori Kobayashi, Shinei Animation produced the scenario.
The new anime features stories that were not adapted from the original manga, as well as new stories supervised by series creator Kobayashi.
Update: The anime aired in India on Sony Yay! starting in August 2025.
In an interview with Animation Xpress at the Animation & More Summit in September 2025, business head at SPNI Ambesh Tiwari talked about the how the original Obocchama-kun anime became a huge success in India during the 2020 lockdowns. He noted how it was the efforts of the localization team that made the anime relatable to an Indian audience.
Maiko Sumida from TV Asahi discussed at the Japanese premiere of the anime at the 1st Aichi-Nagoya International Animation Film Festival last December the decision to produce the new series in India, stating that with huge demand from India for a sequel, it would not be ready in time if produced in Japan. So if they produced the scenario in Japan and produced the animation in India they could meet the scheduling demands.
The Obocchama-kun anime's YouTube channel describes the original 1989 series:
The extremely crude Obocchama(Obo Cchama / 'Obocchama-Kun') is the heir of the wealthy Obo family and a new student at the elite Denenchofu Academy. The show is an upper-class comedy anime revolving around Cchama's eccentric elementary school classmates: Kakino Shuhei, the first friend Cchama makes without the help of money; Ojo Samayo, Cchama's fiancee whose family runs the Ojo Company; Fukurokoji Kanemitsu whose family are nearly as rich as the Obos; and the proud Binbo Taijo('Binbocchama') whose family used to be well-off.
The original 164-episode anime adaptation of Kobayashi's Obocchama-kun manga aired in Japan from 1989 to 1992.
Kobayashi's manga serialized in Shogakukan's CoroCoro Comic magazine from 1986 to 1994. Shogakukan published 24 compiled book volumes of the manga.
Update: Corrected and updated article as the new series is the same as the Japanese-Indian co-production announced in 2024.
