Otafest will be hosting Shinichi "Nabeshin" Watanabe, Toby Proctor, Linda Ballantyne and more on May 15-17, 2015 in Calgary as Special Guests.
CALGARY, AB, April 18, 2015 - Otafest is very excited to announce that we will be hosting Shinichi “Nabeshin” Watanabe, Toby Proctor and Linda Ballantyne as last minute special guests for Otafest 2015 on May 15-17, 2015 at the University of Calgary.

The Man. The Legend. Otafest is so very, very pleased (we're hyperventilating all over the place!) to be able to present fan favorite anime director, story board artist and voice actor, Shinichi "Nabeshin" Watanabe for his first time to Calgary!
Nabeshin has been directing anime since the 1980's and is the director of such fan favorite comedy anime as Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemi! He's been to anime conventions all over the world, and we are so very pleased to be able to have him with us for Otafest 2015!
A partial list of Nabeshin's credits include being the chief director on Fair, then Partly Piggy, Lupin III: Da Capo of Love - Fujiko's Unlucky Days / The Columbus files, Excel Saga, Dotto! Koni-chan, Puni Puni Poemi, Tenchi Muyo GXP, éX-D: Danger Zone, Nerima Daikon Brothers, The Wallflower, and Monster High!
LINDA BALLANTYNE
For the past 20 years, Linda has worked professionally on stage, screen and television, and has been heard in hundreds of radio and television commercials worldwide. Her extensive animation career consists of a wide variety of characters including series leads in Sailor Moon (Sailor Moon/Serena), Mia and Me (Queen Mayla), My Big Big Friend (Lilly's Mom), The Avengers (Wasp), Toot and Puddle (Tulip), Will and Dewitt (Shelley), Disney's Yin Yang Yo (Saranoia, Ella Mental, Smoke and more), Gerald McBoing Boing (Gerald's Mom), Meteor (Sinker), Cyberchase (Wicked), Mischief City (Mrs. Adams), Corduroy (Moppy's Mom), Timothy Goes to School (Fritz's Mom), Air Master (Kaori Sakiyama), Bakugan (Kararina), BeyWheelz (Leader B/Lucy), and Animal Shelf (Getup), as well as various characters in The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, The Doodlebops, Totally Spies, 6Teen, Time Warp Trio, Carl Squared, Bob and Margaret, Girl Stuff Boy Stuff, George Shrinks, etc. She has also voiced characters in the feature films Disney's Lucky Ducks (Reporter), Care Bear's Journey to Joke-A-Lot (Champ Bear), Care Bear's Big Wish Movie (Champ Bear) and Thomas and the Magic Railroad (Percy).
Linda was contracted as the "voice" of the Comedy Network for 13 years and is currently creating and writing an animated series entitled Simply Wicked. Linda is also the host of the edgy new radio show I'm Just Sayin' on Canada Talks (#167), SiriusXM's newest channel.
Linda is the happily married mother of 3 perfect teenaged daughters.
TOBY PROCTOR
Toby Proctor has been involved in the entertainment industry for over 30 years. He started on stage at the age of 8 playing the lead role of Little Lord Fauntleroy at the Confederation Centre for the Performing Arts in Prince Edward Island in Canada. He then moved on to performing in many Canadian series as a guest star as well as US features. Toby played Dirk Tackleberry in the Warner Brothers series Police Academy the series in Vancouver for 26 one hour episodes. He also voiced the lead role as Alex Gordon in the Flash Gordon animated series in 1996.
Toby has worked alongside the likes of Kathy Bates, Dianne Wiest, Neil Patrick Harris, Mr.T and many more.
Most notably he voiced the characters Darien and Tuxedo Mask in the world renowned series Sailor Moon.

Otafest is a Calgary based non-profit organization expressing the values of charity, quality, and transparency. The body of our activity pertains to the promotion of Japanese art, culture, and media in the Canadian community, and our organization rests firmly on the spirit of community collaboration and volunteerism.
Otafest was born in 1999 when the University of Calgary's Dedicated Otaku Anime Club decided to have a 1 day film festival showing Japanese Animation (anime) to the public.
Over the next decade, Otafest has grown to become a three day festival with approximately 4000 attendees annually. The festival is run by a non-profit organization (Otafest Film and Cultural Festival Planning Committee), and while we still showcase anime, it is just a part of the festival experience.
Otafest is an annual conference for anime enthusiasts. We act as a creative outlet for fans, an occasion where they can show their passion and appreciation of the hobby. We are an event where fans can show off the costumes they have made, the music videos they have created, and the art they have painted and drawn. Otafest is a forum for discussion and education. We host educational panels introducing others to the basics of the Japanese language and tips on how to use computer programs to enhance music videos and CG art. In the past, we have hosted guests who explained the process of donning a kimono, demonstrated the intricacies of tea ceremonies, and Iaido (the art of drawing a sword from a scabbard). We have also invited individuals involved in the voice acting and animation industries to speak of their experiences.
Otafest is a marketplace. We gather dozens of vendors together from all over Western Canada to facilitate the best bargain hunting in town. And, of course, we haven't forgotten our roots: Otafest is an anime festival.
We bring the latest shows and videos, as well as the fondest classics, and provide an opportunity for fans to see anime on the big screen as well as a chance for the curious to see what it's all about. We provide a chance for fans to get together and celebrate their hobby, and to share their passions with each other.
OTAFEST AURORA
Otafest Aurora is a one day festival held at SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology). It is the successor to Otafest Lite, a festival held from 2009 to 2011.
Otafest Aurora was created in response to feedback from our attendees who wanted a better winter festival. Our team was challenged to provide new experiences that would be exclusive to Aurora while expanding the events that our attendees are familiar with and love. Otafest Aurora will feature many vendors, a larger artists alley, cosplay, as well as panels and showings. New to our winter festival is a gala dinner and dance, a formal event that is sure to add a level of class never seen before.
Creating Otafest Aurora gave us an opportunity to add a new face to represent our team. Persephone's best friend, Aurora will work to promote the winter festival. While Seph represents the history and traditions of Otafest, Aurora represents the energy, creativity, and enthusiasm of Otafest and all of it's participants.
