What is this?

Seiichi Hiiragi is at the bottom of his school's social pecking order, but he and his entire school are upended when everyone in the school is transported into another world. Seiichi finds himself alone and approached by a gorilla, who instead of attacking him, proposes to him. At the moment that Seiichi thinks that "I guess a gorilla is fine too," they find the Fruit of Evolution, and when they eat it, their lives are suddenly changed once again.

The Fruit of Evolution 2: Before I Knew It, My Life Had It Made is based on Miku and U35's light novel series and streams on Crunchyroll on Fridays.

How was the first episode?

James Beckett
Rating: Abandon Hope, All Ye Who Enter Here

There was exactly one moment in the second season premiere of The Fruit of Evolution that made the stony expression on my face shift even one iota. It was when the random villain kid from the needlessly over-the-top opening battle managed to gut Seiichi with his scythe. I didn't laugh, obviously, nor was it enough to get me to crack a smile. There are few evils out there that are as great and dark as Seiichi “I Play Tonsil Hockey With a Giant Pink Gorilla When I'm Not Actively Seducing Literal Donkeys and Underage Cat-Girl Lolis" Hiiragi. I know full well that this hated lord of suck couldn't possibly die so easily. But when that giant anime scythe slipped into his guts, I let myself feel hope for just one fleeting second, and it may have been enough to bring a tear to my eye.

Then, for the following twenty minutes, I had to sit through all of the godawful jokes, all of the stupid references, all of the screeching coming out of the characters' mouths, and the light of hope was snuffed out of my soul for good. I mean, just think of every great unfinished work of art, every unsung masterpiece, every classic in the making that was canceled before its time. We live in a world that only got one season of The Dark Crystal. We live in a world where Alita: Battle Angel might never get a sequel. We live in a world that allowed that Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer anime to happen.

And yet, this…thing. This…”comedy" that I genuinely do not believe has ever been seen by any living human aside from myself? This ugly, boring, and frankly embarrassing waste of everyone's time? This NFT hocking cringe trash? This gets a second season? Oh, so, what, Seiichi's a teacher now? And the animation has, in a couple of very specific instances, gotten ever-so-slightly less terrible looking? Big whoop!

Is all of that supposed to make us forget that Seiichi's voice has literally been identified as a Combat-Induced PTSD trigger by the world's foremost military leaders? Is that supposed to make us just brush aside that one time Seiichi defiled the soul of Abraham Lincoln for the sake of one of the stupidest jokes ever conceived? Are we just meant to look the other way when Seiichi repeatedly spits on the very laws of nature so he can rope more poor animals into his filthy, degenerate war harem?

I just…don't understand. Where did we go wrong? What higher power did we offend? What terrible original sin did we commit to deserve this? Is it even possible to believe in a just and righteous God when faced with such overwhelming and blasphemous despair??

Let me spoil that last one for you: No. No, it is not. The Fruit of Evolution will destroy whatever faith you might have had in the foundations of your world, and it will do so with such a stupid goddamn smile on its face that you might trick yourself into thinking that it doesn't know exactly how evil it truly is. I'm begging you, heed my warnings. It's too late for me, but you might still be able to save yourselves! Just promise to tell my story. Don't ever let anyone suffer what I have had to suffer. Don't ever let anyone watch The Fruit of Evolution.
